READER ROCK GARDEN

I met this lovely couple in Reader Rock Gardens.  They appeared very content and had a genuine affection for each other.  Life has not always been easy for them but dealing with adversity has made them stronger.   “Ad astra per aspera”.

YOU CAN NEVER BE...

In some cultures, the financial status of the male is measured by the breadth of his girth while the female is often the exact the opposite.  ‘You can never be too rich or too thin’ is a phrase that has made its way into popular culture.  But is that true?  It could be the blueprint for a very unhealthy life style. Perhaps ‘moderation in all things’ is a better catch phrase.

WHIDBEY ISLAND FINE ART STUDIO AGAIN

Another excellent workshop on Whidbey Island.  This time with Robert Liberace who has earned the title "Living Master".  He is an exceptional instructor as well as an accomplished artist.  Here is a study I did during the workshop.

WHIDBEY ISLAND FINE ART STUDIO

I haven't posted recently as I am spending the summer studying with some great instructors on Whidbey Island.  I've just finished a workshop with David Shevlino, a very interesting figure painter.  His work is characterized by lovely loose brush strokes that flow between figure and ground - very lively, very beautiful.  This painting is a study I did in class.

WHITE RABBIT

One day you are walking along, everything perfectly normal when you see a white rabbit where it shouldn’t be.  All of a sudden your world is turned upside down and you feel like you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole into a fantasy.  You bumble along for awhile growing bigger, growing smaller, almost disappearing, finally returning to the real world.  But it will never be the same.

RUDI AT REST

As a student of art history I have always been drawn to the strong foreshortening of Mantegna’s Lamentation of Christ.  When I saw a friend drying out after a swim in the same pose it seemed like the perfect compositional choice to depict a Sage.  Much more akin to Manet’s portrayal of the same subject there is no overt mysticism or spirituality.  He is simply a contemporary character completely at ease in his surroundings.

ACROBAT ON TRAPEZE

A daring acrobat perches high above the ground without a net.  He is precariously balanced, challenging the boundaries between life and death.  Meanwhile, his female companion is soaring effortlessly above the crowds with confidence and grace.  Coincidence?  I think not!

JUST DO IT

“Just Do It” is the Nike slogan, “Yes We Can” is the Obama slogan.  But what about those who can’t do it anymore or just don’t want to.  Those who are content to cheer on those who can.  In the world of heroes, spectators are required.
