AUBERGE

A young woman in leather rebelling against the strictures of society.  The motorcycle is a means to move forward, to experience life and gain independence.  But having a place of refuge near by is a useful thing.

HOUSE OF CARDS

Relationships are often built on shaky foundations and can easily collapse when elements are overlooked or unappreciated.  Often a combination of earthy sexuality (snake) and romantic love (rose), the secret is to find the right balance, the perfect harmony of yin and yang.  Only then can the House remain standing.

NO SORROW CAFE

The No Sorrow CafĂ©, a place to drown one’s sorrows while contemplating the vagaries of life.  Pink roses symbolize partnerships but yellow roses stand for treachery and infidelity.  Is he contemplating an affair or has he been the unhappy recipient of the yellow rose?  Footsteps indicate directionality and these are leading out of the picture – exit stage right.  But does that mean the possibility of a return engagement?

MONKEY TALES

Female party animals are a bit more refined than their male counterparts.  The monkey is a symbol of passion unlike the raw sexuality of the fish.  Michelangelo’s Dying Slave has a monkey emerging from the unfinished marble at his feet, leading some to speculate that the figure is not dying at all but represents an enslaved passion.  Whatever -- the evening shows great promise.

ST. JOHN'S SATURDAY NIGHT

The Party Animals lurking at their favourite watering hole on Saturday night.  They take aim at the ubiquitous cougar, a powerful creature to be both worshipped and feared.  The fish, a common Beckmann symbol for sexuality, suggests that the game is afoot.

ON LOVE

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

MEN OF VISION #3

The idea for this painting comes from the sign on the Cochrane Branch of the Canadian Legion – Men of Vision #15.  I’ve always liked the idea of old men, possibly war vets, solving the problems of the world over a pint.  Drink of choice is beer, the nectar of the gods.  And of course, man’s best friend loyally protecting and providing companionship.
